This course will introduce the learner to the basics of trade finance and trade transactions, with emphasis on the parties involved in these transactions, such as importers, exporters, banks, and carriers. Additionally, the course will cover the most important documents that are required in trade finance transactions, such as letters of credit, drafts, invoices, and certificates of origin and insurance. After completing this program the learner will understand:

  • Letters of credit.
  • Documentary collections.
  • Working capital financing.
      Course Topics

      T1. Trade Finance Basics: This topic will introduce the learner to the basics of trade finance and trade transactions, with emphasis on the parties involved in these transactions, such as importers, exporters, financial institutions, and carriers.

      T2. Trade Finance Documentation: This topic will familiarize the learner with the most important documents that are required in trade finance transactions, such as letters of credit, drafts, invoices, and certificates of origin and insurance.

      T3. International Commerce Terms: This topic will familiarize the learner with important terms associated with international commerce, such as ex-works, free carrier, cost and freight, and carriage paid to.

      T4. Understanding LCs: This topic will define what a Letter of Credit (L/C) is and will familiarize the learner with the different types of L/Cs and the steps involved in issuing an L/C.

      T5. Documentary Collections: This topic will introduce the learner to documentary collections, including the documentary process, remitting and collecting procedures, and the methods of settlement.

      T6. Guarantees: This topic will define guarantees, or bonds, for the learner and will introduce him/her to the types of guarantees, such as bid bonds, performance bonds, and advance payment bonds.

      T7. Working Capital Finance: This topic will introduce the learner to working capital financing and the facilities offered by banks to finance operations, such as short-term loans and revolving credit lines.

      T8. Factoring: This course will define factoring and will educate the learner on risk factors and the similarities and differences between factoring and invoice discounting.
