Understand how stored goods can support working capital

Goods in storage can represent substantial value, while the business that owns them still needs cash to operate. Warehouse finance connects these stocks with funding, supported by reliable records, enforceable rights and effective control.

But a warehouse receipt alone is not enough.

How can a lender establish that the goods exist? What happens when prices fall? Who can authorise their release? And what protection does an independent stock report actually provide?

This practical eBSI Trade Finance Academy course helps you answer these questions and assess warehouse-finance transactions with greater confidence.

Follow the complete transaction

Explore warehouse finance from the arrival and inspection of goods through to lending, monitoring, repayment and release.

You will examine how the physical goods, documentary records and cash flows must remain connected throughout the transaction. Along the way, practical examples show how weaknesses in custody, valuation, insurance or legal rights can undermine an apparently well-secured facility.

The course combines commercial understanding with the operational detail needed to recognise problems and ask informed questions.

What you will learn

Warehouse finance foundations

Understand why producers, processors and traders use warehouse finance, how lenders assess its commercial value, and the conditions needed for a dependable warehouse-receipt system.

Risks, legal rights and warehouse receipts

Explore the relationship between ownership and possession, competing claims, security priority and enforcement. Learn what to check in negotiable, non-negotiable and electronic receipts, including controls over issuance, transfer, splitting and cancellation.

Warehouses, custody and insurance

Compare public, private, terminal and field warehouses. Examine site suitability, independent access, stock movements and insurance terms, including the limitations of relying on an operator’s reputation or a policy description.

Valuation and lending calculations

Work through examples covering eligible collateral value, advance rates, reserves and borrowing availability. Calculate the impact of a price fall and the repayment needed before a proposed release of goods.

Collateral management and stock monitoring

Distinguish continuous custody and release control under a Collateral Management Agreement (CMA) from periodic reporting under a Stock Monitoring Agreement (SMA). Assess what each arrangement provides and where protection may be limited.

Related financing structures

Compare warehouse finance with supplier finance, inventory finance, pre-export finance and commodity prepayment. Explore the roles of controlled collection accounts, commodity repos, special purpose vehicles and risk-sharing arrangements.

Fraud prevention and investigation

Recognise warning signs such as duplicate receipts, impossible stock quantities, concealed low-value materials and unauthorised releases. Use a fictional coffee-stock case to practise responding to conflicting evidence about quantity and quality.

You will also examine the role of IFC’s Global Warehouse Finance Program in supporting eligible agricultural financing.

Apply the learning to practical decisions

Throughout the course, you will consider questions such as:

  • Does the available evidence support the quantity and quality stated on a receipt?

  • Can the borrower still access and release supposedly controlled stock?

  • How much additional finance is available against the current borrowing base?

  • What repayment is needed before goods can leave the warehouse?

  • Does an insurance policy cover the loss being considered?

  • What should happen when receipts, warehouse capacity and physical samples conflict?

These examples help you connect financing structures with the evidence and controls required to make them work.
